Ispirandosi al Filottete di Sofocle, che perde tutto e viene esiliato per una ferita, e al mito di Cassandra, Milo Rau, maestro internazionale del teatro documentario contemporaneo, scava nella fragilità delle nostre certezze. Un’opera biografica nel senso più vero del termine, basata su testimonianze e contaminazioni.

Ursina Lardi, Leone d'Argento alla Biennale Teatro 2025, interpreta il ruolo di una fotoreporter di guerra che viaggia in tutto il mondo alla ricerca di storie dell’orrore. In video, invece, scorre la testimonianza di Azad Hassan, insegnante di Mosul punito con l’amputazione della mano durante l’occupazione dello Stato Islamico.

Il personaggio di Lardi sembra sempre invulnerabile, sempre un passo avanti al dolore. Ma quando sarà lei a subire violenza, diventerà una Cassandra ostile, il cui unico obiettivo è combattere la cecità dei nostri tempi. È un “ponte per la verità” che guida il pubblico attraverso una narrazione che unisce realtà e finzione, cronaca ed emozione, elevando il teatro a strumento di catarsi etica, ponendo un interrogativo fondamentale sul ruolo dell'arte nel lenire il dolore o nel cadere nel voyeurismo.

In a monologue based on the life stories of war photographers and own experiences, director Milo Rau explores the fragility of our certainties: Why is violence so tempting? What remains when war and terror destroy the world as we know it?

In The Seer, Ursina Lardi plays a war photographer who travels to conflict areas around the world seeking images of dread. She seems always one step ahead of the suffering, and at the same time untouchable. Until she has first-hand experience of what it means to be subjected to violence herself. The celebrated war photographer becomes a jaundiced Cassandra who seeks to battle the blindness of our times.

Milo Rau’s new play is based on the life stories of war photographers, Iraqi citizens and own experiences such as an encounter with the teacher Azad Hassan in Mosul, whose hand was severed as punishment during the Islamic State occupation.

Inspired by Sophocles’ figure Philoctetes, who loses everything due to an injury andis banished from society, Rau explores the fragility of our certainties.

Why is violence so tempting? What remains when war and terror destroy the world as we know it? Can art soothe suffering?
