Berlino, mattina presto, una cucina. Nina e Mark sono una coppia da oltre 20 anni. Lei è un membro del parlamento e, oltre a destreggiarsi tra numerose altre responsabilità, lavora duramente per evitare la chiusura di una fatiscente Casa rifugio per donne. Lui prima era un avvocato aziendale di successo, adesso, dopo essere andato in burnout, ha ottenuto la qualifica di maestro di scuola elementare, e lotta per trovare la sua strada nella nuova professione.
Mentre fanno colazione discutono della giornata che li aspetta. Dopo colazione, si separano. Nina parte per la Casa rifugio e poi, più tardi, va in ufficio, dove si trova di fronte a problemi inaspettati, mentre Mark va a scuola e si ritrova in situazioni difficili che coinvolgono sia gli alunni che i loro genitori...
La sera, quando si incontreranno di nuovo a casa, le esperienze della giornata avranno cambiato sia loro che il loro rapporto.

Thomas Ostermeier directs Maja Zade’s new play, which sees Anna Schudt and Jörg Hartmann return to the Schaubühne ensemble. The two of them play 23 roles: Nina and Mark as well as 21 other characters that the couple meet on their respective paths through the day.
Berlin, early morning, a kitchen. Nina and Mark, who have been a couple for over 20 years, are discussing the day ahead as they have breakfast together. Nina is a member of parliament, and aside from juggling numerous other responsibilities, is working hard to prevent the closure of a run-down women’s shelter. Mark used to be a successful corporate lawyer, but retrained as a primary school teacher following a burnout, and is now struggling to find his way in his new profession.
After breakfast, they part ways. Nina leaves for the shelter and then later on goes to her office, where she is confronted with unexpected problems, while Mark heads to school and finds himself in challenging situations involving the schoolchildren and their parents…
In the evening, when Nina and Mark meet again at home, their experiences of the day have changed both them and their relationship to each other.
Changes is a play about the difficulty of changing the world for the better, and the effort it takes not to lose oneself in the process. What compromises can one agree to without actually compromising oneself? How thin is the border between success and failure?

Il fascino distintivo dell’opera di Maja Zade sta nel fatto che i due interpreti devono trasformarsi in una serie di personaggi diversi, anche molto rapidamente, a volte nell’arco di una sola frase. Durante le prove eravamo costantemente di fronte alla domanda: quanto – o quanto poco – serve per creare un personaggio in scena? Un oggetto di scena, un elemento del costume o una parrucca possono aiutare, ma ovviamente la vera trasformazione sta nella recitazione. Accettare questa sfida con due interpreti meravigliosi, e vivere così, insieme, un giorno tanto speciale nella vita di una coppia, è stato un enorme piacere.

The specific appeal of Maja Zade’s play lies in the fact that the two actors slip into a number of different characters very quickly, sometimes even within one sentence. During rehearsals, we were constantly faced with the question: how much or how little do you need to create a character on stage? A prop, a piece of costume, a wig can help. But the real transformation, of course, lies in the play of the actors. Accepting this challenge with two wonderful actors and living through a very special day in the life of a couple together in this way was a great pleasure.

La Schaubühne è stata fondata nel 1962 da un gruppo di studenti guidati da Jürgen Schitthelm a Berlino Kreuzberg. Dal 1981 ha sede all'estremità occidentale del Kurfürstendamm, assumendo l'attuale nome di "Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz". Oggi è uno dei teatri più famosi e rinomati nell'area di lingua tedesca. Il fulcro dell'attività della Schaubühne è la compagnia stabile di circa 30 attori. ABOUT SCHAUBÜHNE
The Schaubühne was founded in 1962 by a group of students around Jürgen Schitthelm in Berlin Kreuzberg. It has been located at the western end of Kurfürstendamm since 1981 when it adopted its current name of the “Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz”. Nowadays it is one of the most famous and renowned theatres in the German speaking area. The
Schaubühne’s permanent ensemble of around 30 actors is at the core of its work. The theatre’s repertoire includes titles from the worldwide canon of drama as well as contemporary plays by internationally recognised writers which – with well over 100 world and German premieres during the last 22 years – have been a central part of the theatre’s output. Each season, the Schaubühne premieres around six new productions. In addition, a repertoire of more than thirty plays can be seen in rotation.
